The music video will mainly consist of long shots. This is
so I can have shots that show the scenery and the location that it is set and
filmed in. there will be some close up shots. These will be done to show the
features of the persons face and their expressions as well. There will be close
up of mainly the girl’s faces this is because these will be used to focus upon
the makeup features and the bold style of makeup that I am wanting to do for my
music video. There will be close ups of the hair of the girls. Showing the long
plaits and curly style of hair. I will use different style of shots and panning
will be used to show the location and the clothing that the actors are wearing.
The video will have a lot of point of view shots there will mainly be form the guy’s
point of view looking at the girl. This will be in the style of a Taylor Swift
music video where there is a guy and a girl and there will be mainly shots
between the both of them. Different locations and time frames will be used to
show how the love has developed and changed. The main lighting that will be
used will be from natural sources such as daylight. There will be a lot of candle
light and light from flames. This part of the video will be filmed during bonfire
night this will allow me to get the style of family and friends and the bright
bold lighting style that I want. There will be shot showing family and friends
together. There will be sunset/sunrise shots used to show the friends and family
together and either walking or sitting somewhere looking towards the sunrise
and sunset.

Structure ideas
With the style of music video that I want to create the
location and setting that I need will be mostly woodland areas and rural locations.
There will be some filming and shots taken in more urban locations of towns and
cities but this will only be in very few shots. I think that by filming in
these locations in the seasons of autumn and winter will allow me to get the
desired effect from the music video that I want. I believe that by having the
colder months to film in this will allow me to get a colour scheme to use. This
will be reflected in the clothing of the actors within my music video. The style
of these colours and the lighting that I will get from my filming. The clothing
and colour scheme is important when making a music video as this is what
ensures the colours all matching this will help to make sure that the video all
fits together well and does not have any visuals that clash together. The lighting
is important this is because it cannot be to bold or harsh and cannot be to
dark it needs to just show features of the person and what they are doing.
Prose
For my music video I want to create a home video style music
video. The main inspiration that I will be using for my video will be Phillip
Phillips song Gone Gone Gone and also Ed Sheeran’s song Photograph. This is
because I like the idea of using home footage as this makes the video more
personal. This is good as it allows the artist to show their fans a part of
their life. The use of images and videos from different time periods show the
progression of the video. The use of old and new images and videos make the
video seem more realistic. The images and videos within my music video need to
be random and very different this is because I want it do have a different
style and feel to each part of the video. I think that the style from Ed
Sheeran and Phillip Phillips songs are good to use for inspiration because I
can use the same filming and colour scheme style. I am wanting to use the
autumn and winter months to create a certain style to the video. By using the
seasons like autumn and winter this allows me to use autumnal colours and
weather to create the style that I want. I think that by using bonfire night as
a setting for part of the music video this will allow me to film with the
fireworks and in the night. This will allow me to film where there is a family
and friends style surrounding and this will allow me to get some footage and
images that will give a different style and feel to my video that will stand
out and look and have a different feel compared to others out there.
Props, makeup, costume design and choreography
Make up
The makeup style needs to be like a Taylor swift style. This
is because there needs to be a flawless pale face with rosy cheeks and emphasis
facial definition. This needs to be similar to Taylor Swift’s style of neutral
make up style with bold colours featuring. There needs to be deep dark and red
lip sticks with berry colours. These need to match the type of style with the seasons.
E.g. autumnal colours to match with the weather. Brassy colours such as gold
and bronze need to be used as eye shadow this is to create a look of more fairy
tale style than day to day. Bold eye makeup needs to be used to make them stand
out. High definition and tick bold eyebrows would be a good feature as this
would allow there to be another bold facial feature to focus on along with the
bold lips.
The main style that I will base my visuals on will be the
Taylor Swift and Lily Collins style. I think that Taylor uses a clean and basic
make up style in her music videos that make it more effective. The actress Lily
Collins in the Movie Mirror Mirror is the main style that I will base my makeup
design off this is because I think that her pale make up, red lips and tick
bold eyebrows enable her look to be one of the main features within the video. I
think that the best look to base my makeup on will be Lily Collins as this is
the main style that I am aiming to achieve. This is also linked with the
setting that is in the movie because it is mainly filmed in woodland during the
autumnal and winter months enabling there to be a more winter feel to the video
Hair
The hair style will be long and flowing. It will have a
beach wave, messy windswept style to it. It will have styles like long plats
and fish tail designs. This will help achieve the genre style that I want this
is because the long messy haired style will go well with the indie, alternative
rock style that I want to achieve with my music video.
Costume
Girls, black jeans and oversized boyfriend fit shirts. Dark colours
and oversized jumpers these will all be in relation to the autumnal colours
that I wish to achieve. Brown bots and wellies will be a feature item this is because
this look will help to create an indie alternative look to the video. Scarves,
hats and gloves are good pieces to use as this gives the audience an idea of
what the weather is like and also allows there to be a good scene setter piece.
This helps with the style of location as this will influence the thoughts of
the audience. Knitted items need to be featured as this chunky knit style will
give the video a different feel.
Boys, dark colours will be used on the boys as this will
help to contrast against the girls’ clothing and the autumnal colours. Layering
will be used to create a multiple effect this will be done with colour schemes
ensuring that the colours and styles of clothing that are used will match the
rest of the video. This is so no items of clothing look out of place within the
video.
Props and feature pieces
The items that will feature in the music video will be
acoustic guitars, this is because the music style consists of this style of
music. The scenery will be mainly woodland based and fallen leaves and twigs. Bonfire
night will be a good setting to use for parts of our final production as this
will allow there to be a family and friends setting that will have the desired
outdoor and cold weather effect. This is a good setting to film in because the
style of clothing and colours that I want in my music video will be there. The use
of bright lights with the sparklers and fireworks will also add an atmospheric
feel to the video.
Choreography
The main style of dancing and movement will be fairly slow
pace. This will consist of walks through woodland and other rural areas. This will
help to emphasise the lyrics in the video. There will be no real dancing as
such this is because the video its self will mainly be constructed with lots of
different home forage videos that will all be put together to create a different
style of video. The different locations will affect the different styles of choreography
that is used this is because the different locations will influence the style
of dancing and movement that we use in our music video.

Music Video Inspiration : NoNoNo - Pumpin Blood
This music video is basic but effective. This is because it mainly
consist of videos and images from the same location. By having one consistent location
through the video this enable the viewer to have a single location to focus on.
The main feature of the video that I am interested in are they lyrics and the
melody. This is because they are a very upbeat style that would be very easy to
replicate into a music video of my own. The lyrics and the melody of this are
done in a style that builds up over the duration of the song. It has points
within the music where the lyrics and sound become much more upbeat and faster this
means that I could change and use different style of videos and images to match
the lyrics and the melody. The song has
many different style and lengths of instrumentals throughout this means that I could
use different styles of videos and images to match the music at each point. The
music begins with a slow paced tune and then becomes quicker paced and build up
over the first 25 seconds of the song. For the first 25 seconds of the music
there is no music this is important as this can be used to create an introduction
to the video and this can be used to set the ‘scene’ for the video and the style
that it is going to be.
For the music video style that I have chosen to base my
video on is alternative rock. This is a good style to choose as there is an
audience that enables you to reach out to other genre specific clients as this
is in-between two very different styles. Therefore enabling me to create a
video that appeals to more people. The style of the music video Pumpin Blood
consists of a style that is both up beat and rock style and a more calm slower
paced style. Within the chorus it became more alternative rock as it has the
heavier beats and music along with the softer and much calmer lyrics. Along with
the vide this is a very alternative rock style this is because it jumps between
the two styles. Showing a beach and the sands and then when it comes to the chorus
it changes to a style of more rock that has the flashing dark lights along to
create a much more rock style that will help me to achieve a wider target audience
as there are two different style that I can use to reach the target audience.
Music Video Inspiration : Phillip Phillips - Gone Gone Gone
This music video is similar to Ed Sheeran’s this is because it
also includes home footage and images. However this video differs from Photograph
this is because it includes changing shots between shots showing Phillip
Phillips singing along to the lyrics and then also shots of him and his
family. This video includes images that
are from different times this is because it begins with showing a shot of two
people kissing and then changes to shots of different time periods. This is
clear as the images and videos change in quality. This is effective and it also
includes videos and images that are in black and white this is effective because
this makes the viewer see images from his family. This again makes the viewer
see about his family and his life. The video includes images and videos showing
him and his life and then also has jump shots between these and the footage of
him singing along to the lyrics. The style of music and the lyrics match well to
the visuals this is because there is a folk style to the music and the countryside
setting throughout the video. The main lyrics of the video are ‘Gone Gone Gone’
this is in relation to the videos as it consists of changing shots of people
leaving and videos of people that could be seen as his ancestors and how they
are gone. By having visuals that match the lyrics this makes the video more
effective as this like will enable t video to be more enjoyable and has a more defined
meaning behind it which is clearly displayed in Phillip Phillips music videos.
Music Video Inspiration : Ed Sheeran - Photograph
Ed Sheeran has used a home footage style to create his music
video. The music video is called Photograph this gives the viewer an indication
of what the video is going to be about. This is a very effective style to use
as this allows the artist to use their video to show their life and the style
that they want to be seen in relation to. Throughout this video he has used
various different home videos of himself and his family. He has mainly ordered
them in chronological order this is so the viewer is able to see a sort of time
line through the years of Ed Sheeran’s life. In the videos he has used they mainly
consist of videos showing him playing and learning musical instruments. This is
effective as it shows the audience that he has always enjoyed playing music. The
video consists of videos and no footage of him or anyone singing along to the
lyrics. By making the main focus of the video the Images and the video themselves
as the main focus point this make it more effective to the viewer. This is a
very different style compared to other music videos. This is because there are
not many other artists that have created videos like this one. By creating a
music video that is different and stand out from the crowd this enables Ed
Sheeran to attract his fans on a much more personal basis. This is because by
showing this footage to others it makes his fans feel more in touch with him. This
allows the audience to feel connected with him and his music videos. At the end
of the video it finishes with a video of Ed Sheeran going onto stage at a
concert. It then jumps back to home video and you can hear his dad saying to
him ‘are you at the top of the mountain’ this relates to the video as it shows
him making to and becoming a musician like he has always wanted.
Potential target audience
Audience research is an important factor when it comes to
producing something for the public. This is needed to find out what tastes you
target audience likes and what they want from a music video. When targeting a specific
audience you need to get specific feedback to ensure that the video is going to
be successful. The research that is going to be needed will be mainly primary
this is because I will be able to find out specific features that link to my
music video. There will be two types of feedback when it comes to results these
will either be Quantitative or Qualitative research this is because Quantitative
will give me structured data and will provide me with conclusions from surveys.
However Qualitative research will enable me to develop a summary which will be
concluded from interviews and focus groups that will allow me to find out
exactly what the consumer will want.
It is difficult to have a target audience that is just an
age group. This is because all people have very different tastes in music and
the style of videos that they enjoy therefore it is difficult to base a target audience
on just an age group. By creating a target audience profile this enables you to
create a music video that is well adjusted and is well designed so it meets the
exact desired features that the clients and target audience want. Features that
must be included are demographics, lifestyle, brands and psychographics this
will help indicate what they want.
The main style that I will be focusing my client profile on
will be alternative rock this enables me to have two very different target audiences
which allows me to have more people to aim my music video at. I will mainly use
picture and mood boards to portray the genre and style that I believe my
clients will like.
I have used images of existing bands that i listen to and what the style of alternative rock is associated with. I believe that these bands and there specific style of music and their videos will assist me in the production of my own. I believe that the style of clothing and individuals that are on my mood board also reflect upon the style of the individuals that will like the alternative rock music that I am wanting to emphasis in my music video. I have used shots from existing music video such as the bottom right image of Jamie T's music video Sticks 'n' Stones.

Firths 3 music video catagories
Performance, Narrative and concept
Performance base video is where the band is the main focus of the video this is done like it is a concert. in some cases it consists of the band just being stood there singing the song either on a stage or in front of the camera.
A good example of this would be Royal Bloods music video Little Monster. This is because throughout this video they are the main center feature and it is focusing on them.
Narrative base video is where there is a story line based around the video. This is so there is a different meaning besides the music. This important as it gives certain bands a different edge comped to others.
A good example of this would be Rudimentals music video Free ft. Emile Sande. This is because there is a main story line behind the video. They do this with most of their videos.

A good example of this would be Radioheads music video Just. this has been used to show the band themselves and is used so they do not to make a detailed music video
Analysis of music videos: Sia - Elastic Heart
Throughout Sia's music videos the same young girl features she always
wears the similar style of clothing. In this particular music video Sia uses
the same girl and Shia Labeouf the well know American actor. There is not
lyrics spoken are mouthed in this music video this is all performance based
this is particularly different as this makes it stand out from others.
At the beginning of the music video they show a wide shot of a room that
has large cage in it. If you look closely you can see the girl and Shia stood
at opposite ends of the cage from each other. As the music begins it changes to
a shot zooming in a panning across Shia face this shows his body and this
facial expression. His stance in this music video begins with a very firm and
sturdy stance. This makes him seem strong. It then changes to a shot of the
girl also of her face this shows her facial expression which seems to be angry.
As the music and lyrics begin together it is clear that this is performance
base. They begin to move around the cage in opposite directions from each other.
It uses shots of them within the cage and then shots from outside this is to
keep the idea of entrapment in the viewer’s minds. It then shows them moving
towards each other in a confident way it then changes to the girls face showing
her screaming it then jumps back to Shia’s face showing that he is scared. This
is emphasis when he moves back away from her. The young girl could be seen as
possessed this is because of their movements and facial expressions. It shows the
girl changing him around the cage and it comes across like she believes it’s a game
and he does not understand. At 2.55 seconds it shows her escaping from the cage
and how he is unable to get out. As she returns into the cage it shows her
hanging from his back this could represent them as one person and the cage
could be their min and how she is able to escape but he isn’t. This is
emphasised when she tries to lead him out of the cage but fails. It shows him
within the cage trust get out and she is pulling him. This is shown for 50
seconds this is done with no music or lyrics to make the ending darker

Analysis of music videos: Disclosure - Magnets ft.Lorde
The beginning focus of the video is Lorde the artist that
features in it for the first 12 seconds there is no singing just the music
going along with the music. It looks like a very futuristic maybe even out of
this wold setting this is because of the two red moons. As it moves in close to
the woman in the shot the scenery can be seen that it is on a high landscape
next to a pool. This shot shows the over view of a city that seems to have two
search helicopters moving over it. It is showing there is a dark and slow paced
introduction to the song. It begins with a slow paced music style and the
lyrics match this by beginning with ‘never really felt bad about it’ this
instigates the fact that there is another thing that is going to feature that
is not a good thing. Then as she begins to sing she moves away from the pool
side and then begins to walk it then pans to a shot of a house. However it
shows a moon in the background which could represent her coming back to
reality. It shows Lorde moving in towards the house and then changes to a shot
at a party it shows a man and a woman stood together talking to people. The
lyrics begin to say ‘I was wondering about you and that girl is she your
girlfriend’ this indicates that the man in the shot is in a relationship with
the girl he is stood next to then it changes to a shot of the same man and
Lorde walking into a room to him. The music then suddenly drops as she walks to
him at a faster pace and then kisses him this relates to the first set of
lyrics this is because she said ‘never
really felt bad about it’ this could mean that it relates to how she and him re
having an affair together. As this happens the lyrics carry on but this is
different as she is actually singing along to them. Then the shot changes to
the man and his wife and then keeps on having shot reverse shot between Lorde
and him being with his wife. At 1.50 the shot changes to Lorde and the man
being in a bedroom walk in closet they are running and moving quickly with each
other indicating that they are trying to hide from his wife. It then changes to
a shot of the wife looking out of the window you only know it is the wife when
the shot pans around to her face and as she turns around you see the man coming
out of the shower as he wipes his face with a towel. It then shows a shot of
the back of Lorde in a long black coat again she is singling along to match the
lyrics. From 2.11 until 2.35 it just shows Lorde dancing and singing as she
moves along a glass corridor that then leads to the swimming pool side that she
was stood at in the beginning of the video. It then shows as she emerges from
the corridor a man tied to a chair you only realise that it is the man when the
shot pans around and shows his panicked face. It then shows as she comes out
from the corridor the wife stood there in similar dark makeup to Lorde’s and
then has shot interchanging between the flash backs to the night and other
events throughout the music video. The key lyrics that feature through the
video are ‘let’s embrace the point of no return’ this keeps on linking back to
the shot of them when the firms met as just the two of them this is
representing the point of no return. At 3.00 it shows her singing ‘let’s
embrace the point of no return’ into his face and it looks like she is shouting
at him as she does this it shows her
grabbing the chair that he is ties to and pushing him backwards into the
pool. Once she does this she then lights a lighter and throws it into the pool
it then ignites the water which indicates that it was flammable. In the final
shot is shows Lorde’s face looking into the flames.

Analysis of music videos: Woodkid - I Love You
The Woodkid music videos are all story telling pieces. This is
shown in all of their music videos. In their video for I Love You they use this
to their advantage to make them stand out.
In the music video they have no lyrics or speaking for the
first 1.10 seconds this makes people focus on the main part of the video which
is the visuals. The video begins with a young boy laid on the floor. This boy
is featured throughout many of their music videos. It then changes quickly to a
seems to be priest walking into a house and removing his jacket. He begins to
clutch his hands together. It quickly changes to a shot of a piano and then
back to him looking at his hands. This shows the audiences that the main
feature through this music video are his hands. It then shows him walking to
the front of a church and the people within it begin to stand up. A man takes his
hat off to show respect to him. At 1.120 the man begins to speak in Russian. He
says he begins to say ‘today I’m going to tell you a story about a man that drowned
in colds oceans water after he lost his believed person. It’s a story about a
man that died twice. This indicates to the audience that there is going to be a
narrative base to this music video. As he says this he moves over to the piano
and begins to play it as he does this the shot then changes to a shot moving
over a rocky landscape and what seems to be a cold one. The lyrics begin at 1.45 seconds as this
happens it continues to have shot reverse shot between the landscape and the priest.
It then shows the same man in different clothes walking across the landscape
and struggling to walk. It has shots
going between the two places it shows the man playing the piano and him walking
across the land possibly towards something. It says ‘whatever I feel about you
seem to care about it’ this is shown when the man is crying this has a direct
link between the visuals and the lyrics. It quickly changes between shots it
shows a young boy sat in the church crying and the lyrics say ‘is there
anything I could do to get some attention from you’ this links to the video as it is showing the man
in two very different ways. However there is a consistent feature within both
pieces as it shows the man always looking at his hands. As the shot then changes
to him going onto a beach and walking into the water there is an instrumental from
3.44 until 4.25 this is used to build suspension. As this takes place he is
slowly sinking deeper and deeper into the water as this happens it shows whales
swimming up from behind him and around him as he gets lower it shows the light
fading and the whales at the surface of the water. His face begins to change and look like stone
as he gets deeper down in the ocean. This is linking to what was said in Russian
at the start about a man who died twice in a cold ocean this is showing the
same man living two very different lives. It is then clarified that this is the
same man when it says ‘whatever I feel for you don’t seem to care about you’
this shows that they are talking about the same person. As he gets lower and
lower the lighting begins to changes and rocks begin to envelop him this could
symbolize how the man he used to be has died. As the music finishes it ends
with the project standing up and looking at his hands which eventually begin to
change into stone like the man in the water.

Analysis of music videos : Royal Blood - Out Of The Black

Throughout the video the lyrics match the visuals this is
shown in first scene when the shop keeper is robbed by the rabbit. The music
style consist of a heavy style and has a strong bass this is reflected in the
visuals because there is a lot of violence throughout. The artist’s do not
feature in their music videos very often this could be because they want the
main focus to be the music and the well created music videos that go along with
them. The shots throughout the video
consist of with wide angled shots or close up this is done because it allows
the viewer to see the expression on the faces of the characters and the wide
shots allow them to see what is going on in the whole shot and surrounding
area. The first shot shows a cartoon newspaper with the headline ‘Aliens’ on it
this gives the viewer a feel for what the theme of the video is going to be
about. For the first 33 seconds of the music video there are no lyrics and it
just consists of a cartoon style introduction along with opening credits that
introduce each ‘character’. The artists themselves do not feature at all
throughout the video this is also along with no one singing along to the lyrics
makes it stand out compared to other music videos. After the 33 second
introduction it then zooms out to show a TV that the introduction was being
showed on then shows a man what seems to be a retail clerk sat on a chair
watching it. As it zooms out and shows it on a TV the lyrics being.
The first
set are ‘how did it feel when it came alive and took you’ these lyrics make the
song seem dark and more mysterious as the sound and lyrics become much more
fast paced it then shows a woman walking into the shop towards the counter
holing a dog. It then swiftly changes back to the retail clerk band how he is
engrossed in the TV that he is watching. At 0.52 seconds it then changes the
pace of music quickly it shows the woman leaning over the counter and then you
can hear a gun shot and along with this you see blood and someone dressed like
a rabbit with a gun.it then changes to a shoot of the rabbit point a gun at the
clerk and then taking an pile of snickers bars off the side and as he runs out
the clerk presses what can be seen as an emergency button. As this happens the
lyrics go ‘you made a fool out of me’ this links to the rabbit stealing from
the petrol station. Throughout the whole video the snickers bar is the main
feature. This gives the audience an underlying piece to focus on.
At 1.45 the
rabbit gets knocked over by the police car and then as the rabbit costume head
is removed the shot changes back to cartoon and then reveals an alien inside it
this links back to the start of the video on the newspaper headline. The video
is in cartoon when the rabbit costume has no head on it. When this is replaced
back onto the ‘aliens’ head the video then changes back to normal.
At 2.30 it
then shows another set of animals and foods coming out of the mist also dressed
in costumes. As the violence begins between the police and the animals it then
changes back to cartoon. Once this finishes it then goes back to the original
style of video. Throughout the video all of the sound effects that are coming
from the video i.e. gun shots are seen and also heard. At 3.10 they stop fighting and it changes to
a shot of the rabbit coming out of the mist and the retail clerk coming out of
the shop.
As this happens he brings out nun chucks from his pocket and the begins
to use them as the animals begin to run at him he is fighting them and the at
the end when he kills them all it goes back to the original style and it shows
him sitting down back in the shop with the snicker bar that was take off him.
As you can see the centre of attention throughout the video is the snickers
bar.
