Analysis of music videos: Woodkid - I Love You

The Woodkid music videos are all story telling pieces. This is shown in all of their music videos. In their video for I Love You they use this to their advantage to make them stand out.

In the music video they have no lyrics or speaking for the first 1.10 seconds this makes people focus on the main part of the video which is the visuals. The video begins with a young boy laid on the floor. This boy is featured throughout many of their music videos. It then changes quickly to a seems to be priest walking into a house and removing his jacket. He begins to clutch his hands together. It quickly changes to a shot of a piano and then back to him looking at his hands. This shows the audiences that the main feature through this music video are his hands. It then shows him walking to the front of a church and the people within it begin to stand up. A man takes his hat off to show respect to him. At 1.120 the man begins to speak in Russian. He says he begins to say ‘today I’m going to tell you a story about a man that drowned in colds oceans water after he lost his believed person. It’s a story about a man that died twice. This indicates to the audience that there is going to be a narrative base to this music video. As he says this he moves over to the piano and begins to play it as he does this the shot then changes to a shot moving over a rocky landscape and what seems to be a cold one.  The lyrics begin at 1.45 seconds as this happens it continues to have shot reverse shot between the landscape and the priest. It then shows the same man in different clothes walking across the landscape and struggling to walk.  It has shots going between the two places it shows the man playing the piano and him walking across the land possibly towards something. It says ‘whatever I feel about you seem to care about it’ this is shown when the man is crying this has a direct link between the visuals and the lyrics. It quickly changes between shots it shows a young boy sat in the church crying and the lyrics say ‘is there anything I could do to get some attention from you’ this  links to the video as it is showing the man in two very different ways. However there is a consistent feature within both pieces as it shows the man always looking at his hands. As the shot then changes to him going onto a beach and walking into the water there is an instrumental from 3.44 until 4.25 this is used to build suspension. As this takes place he is slowly sinking deeper and deeper into the water as this happens it shows whales swimming up from behind him and around him as he gets lower it shows the light fading and the whales at the surface of the water.  His face begins to change and look like stone as he gets deeper down in the ocean. This is linking to what was said in Russian at the start about a man who died twice in a cold ocean this is showing the same man living two very different lives. It is then clarified that this is the same man when it says ‘whatever I feel for you don’t seem to care about you’ this shows that they are talking about the same person. As he gets lower and lower the lighting begins to changes and rocks begin to envelop him this could symbolize how the man he used to be has died. As the music finishes it ends with the project standing up and looking at his hands which eventually begin to change into stone like the man in the water.
